Shionta Pumphrey is a Hematology-Oncology nurse and yoga teacher from southern Maryland with a desire to inspire. Shionta learned early in her career that she needed to find balance with work and her personal life. She was introduced to Bikram Yoga in 2010 by a colleague but shortly after found her true love in Vinyasa Yoga sequences. She relocated to Orlando, FL in 2012 were she connected with Black Girls Run and started her weight loss journey but ultimately fulfilled a longing for sisterhood. During this time, she gained support to start a journey called Shades of Health. It was created to provide more diversity, build a community for fellow yogis to expand their knowledge and understanding of yoga practice and promote ALL races. She taught multiple classes during her Yoga teacher training in 2015, including serving as a yoga teacher at UF Health Cancer Center for oncology patients and their families, while working full time as a nurse.
With the support of her family and friends she was able to complete her Yoga Teacher Training 200 hours August 2015. She now resides in Atlanta, GA and feels blessed to have connected her career as a nurse with her passion to teach yoga. Through investments from yoga workshops, she is able to donate funds to support the National MPS Society and has created and awarded her first scholarship to a future yoga teacher. She continues to create a platform through Shades Of Health, LLC for other African American yoga teachers to share their practice by hosting classes. With purpose and intention, she continues to dedicate her time to studying holistic health, advancing her yoga practice through YTT, and has plans to teach yoga internationally.
